66 North

there were many websites i studied to learn as much as possible about Greenland and its people before going and what always hit me was that alot of times it said entering the east of Greenland was like stepping of the side of the earth,
IT IS,
i will never forget that flight we were not 20 minutes from the coast of Iceland when it started,i was not reading the gouges but if i was to guess every time the plane dropped it had to be a few thousand feet, sitting at window with the propeller just outside i started hearing a difference in the noise,if i could not hear the propeller Chopin, we were dropin, so i knew when to grab on,we got about 2000ft from the landing strip but the winds just blew us away like a feather in the wind,i gained alot of respect for the arctic being so close but yet so far,but for now a picture speaks a thousand words so Anthony put a good slide show together when it opens click on view in high quality,i hope you
enjoy……………………………….

Reykjavik

I knew i could not trust the dam tourist company,i guess they don’t look at the same weather and space websites that i do but its OK i did not build up my hopes, anyway I’m back down south in Reykjavik and i can tell ye I’m feeling the pain, carrying a 60lb backpack around for 5 days wears you down but it was all worth it,i don’t feel any disappointment in not getting into Greenland the pilot tried everything i found out at the airstrip that the flight left again Thursday and made it in,i think of my new friend NUUK with his 3 bottles of duty free bushmills whiskey and 3 cartons of cigarettes and gifts for his daughter and grand children tearing across the ice cap to be with his family for Christmas,I’m sure he is thinking did that crazy Irish man get
to dance under the lights,
it was a amazing time walking around taking in the beautiful arctic taking photos of everything ill be passing the camera to Anthony when i get home give him a few days he will do his magic on his new $2000 apple laptop and i send out a photo show, but for now I’m bring this adventure to a close i want to shut down my brain turn off camera and head over to the Irish pub with its roaring fire and enjoy a few pints and tell a few stories, tomorrow I’m going to one of Iceland best kept secrets http://www.bluelagoon.com/ to soak for the day in the hot springs i might even get me nails done, from there its 22km to the airport for the 18:00 to NYC,i included a few photos my good friend Henry simple had to send me in the middle of my search thanks
Henry ill see ye in
Friday 5pm we got alot to talk about, but for now my friends its goodbye from the beautiful island of www.iceland.com where the people are full of warmth on a cold

Moments alone

I headed out of the village last night after a few hot whiskeys in the local bar,and walked of into another world,i have no idea how far i walked but it was for miles,on my left was the fjord, on my right was the arctic circle, i found a sheltered area which i discovered at morning light was home for what ever they call these 4 legged creatures they look like pony’s or donkeys or a cross between a horse a donkey and a pony with hair down to the ground i could not get close enough for a close up but got a few photos,
the-arctic-dec-08-020alr
i spent the first hour scanning the sky for the nrthren lights but there was to much cloud cover after a while i stopped looking and just started enjoying the moment taking photos of anything that moved or looked interesting, this island is only a baby in life years i followed lava flows and found areas that had no snow and lay down for a snooze with the heat coming from the earth i was comfy cosy,i brought 2 roast beef sambos and a liter of milk to keep me going i placed the milk in the snow and activated 2 hand warmers and put them in the bag with the sambos and let me tell ye at 5am i was having hot roast beef with the butter dripping of the bread and a cool large milk i lay back on the warm ground lit up a smoke and started singing Christmas songs i was laughing me arse of at the top of the world,
i started heading back to the village when the sun popped up for a few hours i got back to the hotel and jumped in the bed ,I’m starting to feel a few pains in the body at this stage so tonight I’m going out for a few pints with the locals, I’m keeping a eye on auroral activity at http://www.gedds.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/ that gives a hour by hour update if things look good ill head back out later,i was just on the phone with a company in Reykjavik that does northern light tours and they say they can pretty much guarantee a show so I’m catching the 12;30 flight back south tomorrow and pay the 100 bucks its just not my style to do tourist things,
but for now my friends I’m going to put on my best outfit which is a pair of jeans a t-shirt and a hoody and go out and have some fun with the locals they luv the Irish up here and as i bring this email to a close i realize what this trip was all about it was not all about getting the NORTHERN LIGHTS, i just wanted some,

Well the day began with a quick check of the weather in Greenland and i knew the answer when the page opened, there is a big low moving in from Canada so i headed over to the airfield just to confirm and there i found my new arctic friends that i spent 5 hrs flying around with yesterday, there is nothing going in says my good friend nuuk, go north he says it will be my best chance, coming from a man who takes a month to cross the icecap to visit his daughter i said north its my good friend nuuk,
so i check and there is my flight leaving in 2hrs so with a quick transfer of tickets i was heading north to akureyri the top of Iceland,i checked into the same hotel i stayed in last year,www.keahotels.is (hotel kea) but as i got a good refund for the flight to Greenland and the helicopter i told the young man behind the desk give me your best room with a view,he told me how much he loved Ireland and the Irish and gave me the best room in the house with a balcony, I’m so happy did ye see the size of the room the airline put me in last night,if i farted it bounced from wall to wall, see photo of my village view here,so anyway its a wait and see moment we have snow clouds moving in but there is a chance later tonight of clear sky,s ,but for now I’m going down for a pint of Guinness and a nice big steak, ill check back in later if i get any updates, thanks for all your emails I’m laughin me ass off at some of your reply,
travel at ease my good friend Nuuk, travel at ease
we will meet again soon
